Be easier to find. Be worth recommending.

Search engines and AI answers need clear, credible information about your business. Start with what a customer actually needs to know.

THE SHORT ANSWER

Local SEO helps people discover a business for relevant services and places. GEO describes work intended to make useful business information easier for generative search systems to find and reference. For Google’s AI search features, the same core SEO practices apply; there is no special AI file or schema required.

Make your service easy to understand

A useful service page answers a specific decision: can this business solve my problem, in my area, under the conditions I need? Explain the service, boundaries, process, pricing factors and the next step. Use your own examples and evidence where you have permission to publish them.

If you serve Chicago, describe the area you actually cover and how you handle requests. A field-service business may need to ask about building access, parking or the job’s location before confirming a visit. An appointment business may need to explain availability, cancellation rules and the contact process. Use details that reflect your operations, not a repeated city name.

Keep the business facts consistent

Maintain the same accurate business name, contact details and service information across the website and profiles you control. If the business is eligible for a Google Business Profile, configure it according to Google’s real-location and service-area rules. Eligibility should be checked before creating a listing; a virtual office is not a shortcut.

Publish only genuine customer feedback and results you can substantiate. Do not create a separate page for every nearby place unless each page has a real reason to exist and useful information of its own. One strong service-area page can serve customers better than dozens of nearly identical pages.

  • Accurate services, hours, contact methods and coverage.
  • Real project evidence, with permission and clear context.
  • A business profile only where eligibility is established.
  • Useful links between services, explanations and the request form.

What changes for AI search?

Google says pages considered for supporting links in its AI search features need to be indexed and eligible for a search snippet. Content should be accessible, clear and consistent with any structured data. Important answers should exist as text, even when the page also uses animation.

Write direct answers, then show the detail that makes them useful: a worked cost example, an operational checklist, a comparison with explicit assumptions, or a real project with documented results. Identify who publishes the information and keep commercial terms current.

There is no guaranteed route to an AI citation. Google does not require a special AI schema or a new machine-readable file. Other search products use their own systems, so monitor actual discovery and referrals rather than selling one universal “AI ranking.”

Review the work and the business outcome

Start with crawlability and indexing, then examine the queries and pages attracting attention. Separate branded searches from people discovering your service for the first time. Review US and Chicago-relevant intent where the available reporting supports it; do not treat a national position as proof of local visibility.

Track useful inquiries and their quality alongside search trends. Search Console impressions are not revenue, and AI traffic cannot always be cleanly identified. Document which changes were made and assess patterns over time. The next priority should come from the gaps you find, not a fixed promise to publish a certain number of words.
